Why is Cozmo the best robot toy of the year?

From Frankenstein’s monster to Wall-E, Hollywood producers, scientists, and children all over the world have been fascinated by the field of robotics, specifically, Artificial intelligence (AI). Though technological discoveries have allowed for mechanical robots to work in manufacturing assembly lines, the topic of whether the human thought process can be reproduced is no longer a thing of the past. Though still very controversial, robots have arrived.

Humans have the power of reason, doubt, and making decisions. More importantly, humans are made up of a diverse number of emotions and reactions to internal and external events. Currently, the term artificial intelligence is difficult to determine. Ideally it would involve creating a machine that could not only mirror human intelligence, but could actively reason, use language, and formulate original ideas. Though computers can solve limited problems and engage by participating in computer generated games, such as chess, the abilities that were once limited, are drastically expanding.

with Cozmo right now, and he gets better the more you play with him. However, there really needs to be a variation as these two games can get tiring easily. Cozmo has an “adventure” mode, where you can drive him around like a remote control car and see things through his point of view. This is one of my favorite features of his. The companion mobile app gives you daily goals to motivate you to interact with Cozmo more. I’ve found that this is mostly why I’ve been play with Cozmo day after day. The thing I’m most excited about now is playing with Cozmo’s SDK, which will hopefully allow me to unlock more of his potential and create abilities for him myself. Other than that, I’ve realized that a lot of the experience of owning Cozmo comes from discovering things that you didn’t expect.

He’s like a new pet that you’re still trying to figure out. For $180, it’s a hefty price for this small robot. I probably wouldn’t recommend getting it for kids under 12 just to entertain them, as I can see them getting bored of Cozmo after a few days. Most of the potential seems to be in the SDK that’s open to developers who wish to further develop Cozmo. Other than that, unless Anki starts coming out with new games and features for Cozmo, I can’t see this product being a good gift to keep kids occupied.

What makes him a top robot toy?

Cozmo is the most sophisticated, cutest, amazing robot we’ve ever tested.  Don’t be fooled by his diminutive appearance.  This little robot will endear you with his childlike personality.  The magic starts as soon as you turn him on, I mean wake him up.  You see Cozmo’s face is a small screen with eyes drawn by a master animator.  His sounds and voice are the stuff of famous movie robots: bleeps and chirps punctuated from time to time when he sees and recognizes you, by his saying your name.  It will make you melt.  When he makes eye contact and says “Jaaames”, I melt each time.

Cozmo is packed with sensors, so he can wheel himself around the room all by himself, or you can take control of him and drive him like a blue eyed RC vehicle, observing the world from his vantage point via the on board camera.  As you play with Cozmo he learns new games and tricks.

The robot comes with three blocks that have their own bit of magic.  When Cozmo is ready to play with them he can turn them on without any help from you.  They just start glowing.  Cozmo can stack the blocks, make them roll, and use them in games.  My grandson was giggling as we played keep-away with the robot.  There is also a Simon-like game, and more games can be added as Cozmo is always growing.

Cozmo is more than the sum of his parts.  There is a personality in there that feels as authentic as a pet’s.  His face, voice, reactions, and even his temper, combine to make something we’ve only seen in science-fiction films.  This isn’t a gimmick or novelty-toy; Cozmo is the future.

About Anki: What company makes the best robot toy?

Anki is a company that was founded by three innovative roboticists from San Francisco. Developed by a team of leading roboticists, game developers, and the designer of the Batmobile, Cozmo is a small robot that was created to play. He interacts, plays games, and gets to know his companions. With a mind of his own, he embodies the expectations of a robot, much like Hollywood’s creations.

Though just 2.5 inches tall, Cozmo is larger than life. Though made for play, Cozmo is programmed with a number of other capabilities and functions. He is made up of 300 different parts, processes more data per second than a Mars Rover, and has a unique and playful personality. The Anki creators designed Cozmo using a combination of artificial intelligence, animation, and image and voice recognition. His small face is an OLED screen that is fitted with two eyes. There is a camera in his face that allows him to identify his playmate. The robot works with a smartphone app. This app allows the user to remember and communicate with his companions. Not only will he say the name, but he also says other words, and communicates with a variety of tones and sounds.

Hello! My name is Chirag. I am trying to learn about artificial intelligence, sparse distributed memory and HTM. Once I learn it, I would like to make practical uses of it. I hope to document my journey of learning and using AI in this blog.
